Style Curly Hair | How To

Prepare your Hair for Styling

I’ve been working with curly hair for over 35 years and I believe that with a little bit of know-how anyone can transform frizzy, dry curls into glossy, defined curls.

As with most things in life, getting hair properly prepared for styling is vital to a successful outcome.

If you want shiny, defined or bouncy curls your approach to your curly hair care routine is what makes the difference. Getting your hair properly prepped, not only impacts the ease of curly hair styling, but also the finished look and feel or your curls.

Curly Hair Style How To | Defined Curls

Curly hair, with all its beautiful twists and kinks and bends, is more prone to breakage. Preparing your hair for styling means keeping it hydrated with a deep conditioner.

The idea is to lock in moisture by smoothing the cuticle, reducing breakage and splits. Moisturised and smoothed your curls can be frizz-free, detangled and shinier when properly treated with a deep conditioner.

Curly Hair Styling | Preparation Essentials

1. Look after Your Scalp

Loving your curls starts with loving your scalp. I know there’s a lot of noise out there about not shampooing curly hair but I have to politely disagree. My view? Keep the scalp clean and free of build-up so that your follicles can grow healthy hair.

Choose a gentle shampoo that adds moisture to your scalp and curls. Not only does the scalp like being clean, but it also loves hydration too. Once your hair and scalp are clean, it’s time for your deep conditioner. Deep conditioning will give you the foundation for styling your hair.

Restore and Shine Hair Masque gets moisture right to the core of the hair and smooths and strengthens the cuticle, giving hair shine and definition,  ready for styling.

2. Wet Hair Absorbs Deep Conditioner

The job of a deep conditioner is to add moisture to the hair and smooth the cuticle.

Wet hair absorbs moisture more easily sot its best do apply after shampooing and rinsing your hair.

However, make sure your hair is not too wet as products can slip off very wet hair, meaning your won’t get the full nourishing benefits of a deep conditioner.

I recommend taking a small your microfibre towel into the shower with you and gently soak up any excess water before you apply conditioner. You’ll get the best results from your conditioner when your hair is wet but not dripping.

3. Be Gentle as you Rinse your Hair

As you rinse your hair, Restore and Shine Hair Masque will release the tangles and you’ll your hair will feel smoother and more defined.

Simply use your fingers to gently detangle any more stubborn areas as you rinse, being careful not to put any tension on the roots.

Being gentle with your hair at this stage is essential. You want to leave the cuticle smooth and ready of styling. After rinsing, pat the hair dry to remove excess water. With hair smooth and hydrated, the foundation is place and you can follow your usual styling routine.
